I believe everyone deserves the best possible living environment they’re able to achieve. With this in mind there needs to be an holistic approach to the design. We need to take into account the outside environment, to create the best inside environment.

Julie Villard
Eco Design Advisor
for Christchurch City Council
Julie Villard is a French architect with 13 years’ experience. She has a passion for architecture, technology and sustainability, building her skills and knowledge in Canada, Switzerland (where she became a specialist in sustainability) and for the past eight years, New Zealand.
Julie embarked in her NZ’s journey working for Chow:hill, Architects-Plus and for the last 5 years, Bob Burnett Architecture. Julie was Bob’s first employee. She liked Bob’s ethos where each new design has to achieve, de facto, a high Homestar rating and also, be innovative.
When embarking in her own journey building her new home, Julie, pouched again the boundaries, using external wood fibre insulation (NZ’s first), following the UK standards for Energy efficiency, airtightness, and indoor air quality.
It also coincided with her appointment as the new Eco Design Advisor for Christchurch City Council. Julie’s new role is to provide free and independent advice for professionals & individuals Cantabrians. She advocates for creating healthier buildings, improving energy, water and material use, minimising waste, and reducing the environmental impact of buildings.
Building The Boat Shed House was a great opportunity to “walk the walk not just talk’’ and putting into practice the advice she provides during her free consultation. To lead by example. The house was open to the public in Jun last year during the Superhome tour, we had more than 1500 visitors over 3 weekends, and it was a real success.
Her main focus is to encourage to do better, and to do better now.

If we Calculate, Legislate, Innovate, Motivate and Educate we can “C L I M E” out of this current situation of poor housing and outdated building standards, and into a more secure, safe and healthy future. Using the best possible components, combined with best possible practice we can make 20 infant deaths per year a statistic of the past. 30,000 children each year are admitted to hospital with preventable respiratory disease relating to their home environment. This must change. We must aim ABOVE CODE and C L I M E our way out.
