THE HEALTHY HOME DESIGN GUIDE

Bob Burnett

Bob Burnett Architecture

Bob Burnett of Bob Burnett Architecture is one of the founders of the Superhome Movement. He has first-hand experience of the impact of housing on health. After the Christchurch earthquake, his family was forced to relocate from their energy-efficient healthy home into substandard rental accommodation. The health of the children deteriorated rapidly and doctors attributed it to the poor housing. He felt compelled to take action – in August 2015 launching the Superhome Movement to create transformative change in the building industry to normalise designing smarter and building better healthy homes.

“Designing energy efficient ‘healthy homes’ for our clients is a clear passion for myself and our design team.

There are so many benefits of living in a warmer, dryer, more comfortable, ‘healthy home’, but, it can at times become quite overwhelming. Especially for those who are new to the idea. Our biggest obstacle is education. The more we educate industry and the public on the design factors and options available, the more ‘healthy homes’ we can design and build, the healthier we will become as a country.

This design guide is in my view, is the clinch pin of making this way of building the new norm and standard throughout New Zealand. It has been an absolute pleasure to have contributed to this guide and on the review panel”.

“Kia Ora, my passion is high performance housing. Access to warm, draught free, durable and earthquake resilient housing should be the right of every New Zealander. Houses built today should still be relevant in 30 years time.

I instigated the development of this guide because I wanted to make a positive difference in the health and welfare outcomes of all New Zealanders. Actions speak louder than words!”

“I began using energy-efficient construction methods 25 years ago, and in 2010 was the first builder in Australasia to build an 8 Home Star rated home. Now with more than thirty energy efficient homes in our portfolio in the last six years, I am more committed than ever to educating myself and helping others around me build to higher standards.

The difference that can be achieved with energy efficient construction is both beneficial for the health of our communities, and most importantly the families living in them”.

“I am Gary Todd, a Director of Gary Todd Architecture. I consider that the Healthy Home Design Guide is best practice advice offered to inform all housing stakeholders of their opportunity to improve the standard of new homes and renovations to be ecologically designed, constructed, monitored, and maintained. Smarter use of energy and low carbon materials can be used to respect and enhance the quality of the built and natural environment, wellbeing of people and sustainability of our planet.

My son Mitchell Todd and I decided to design and build a home of a small, simple footprint and built form to fit an affordable budget. The design brief included being sustainable to the environment with durable construction methods and materials using low energy principles and a well thought out floor plan to offer flexible owner use”.

Bau Division is an established architecture practice working primarily in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions and is directed by John Baker, a Registered Architect and Certified Passive House Designer. We aim to create lasting and meaningful designs that are backed up by technical rigour and strategic thinking.

Healthy homes are core to Bau Division’s approach to design; home should be a haven, and a haven should nurture its occupants, with minimal burden on the environment. John’s time working in Switzerland sharpened his awareness of New Zealand’s inertia in this area, and sparked his commitment to raise the bar.

“For over 20 years we have seen the impact of poor quality housing standards in New Zealand.

We see it every day with our renovation homeowners as they try to to improve their homes, by making them warmer and dryer. But there is a far bigger picture, and the Superhome Movement has given us the opportunity to contribute to something that will have a much larger and longer term impact. One of the reasons that we have remained a primary partner of the Superhome Movement, is that we enjoy working with like minded people that are really making a difference for generations to come”.

“Energy efficient homes have interested me all my adult life. Relatively recent MArch study introduced me to Passive House which, following graduation, I set out to put into practice for myself. The predictable outcome of Passive House design impressed me. I now live in a superbly comfortable house of my own making. As far as energy efficient housing is concerned, this has been a rewarding experience from both the process and the outcome”.

“The construction industry is one of the largest contributors to the world’s greenhouse emissions. Plantation timber is a building material that provides many answers to this problem, being carbon negative, biodegradable and infinitely renewable.

I have been working in the building industry for almost 20 years and have dedicated my career to developing more sustainable and healthy timber products for future generations. During this time I have seen a significant increase in the movement towards more responsible material selection. However there is still a lot more work to do if we are going to sufficiently reduce our impact as an industry”

Too many home builders are building what sells and not what is needed long term. We cannot keep building expensive to heat code minimum homes. But as people don’t know what they don’t know, we see this guide as an important step in improving NZ’s building stock”.

“It has been my good fortune to be involved with the Super Homes Movement in creating something that I know will lead to a better future for all. As a Homes Star Assessor and  a Lifemark Design Partner/ Universal Design expert it’s important that what ours builds not only create healthier environments and a sustainable future, but that the spaces allow diversity to flourish and are inclusively designed for all. A space should be adaptable to all at any stage of life, of any ability. For me, GUD Design Doesn’t Divide. Going forward I think it’s vital to show a commitment to our environment, the planet we inhabit, our families, our communities, and future generations. Building is not just about today, but about future legacies and those that will follow.

In the Maori spirit of Kaitiaki, we are all guardians of the past, present and future, and together we can build the world of tomorrow”.

Martin has had an interesting journey across his life. From starting out studying architecture, to a marketing career, to sharing in a consulting business, he has worked extensively internationally. Now he has spent the last ten years in New Zealand focused on helping people understand how heating and cooling the floor slab in a new home can create fabulous comfort at the lowest total cost.

“A healthy home is a necessity not an add-on. It is fundamental. The tremendous costs of living in an unhealthy home play out financially, physically, and emotionally across our lives. It is a cost that we all pay as a nation. Isn’t it stupid to keep enduring all these costs? We can do better by making smarter choices when we build”.

“As part of the innovative Altus Window Systems family, I am personally motivated to help NZ build better, smarter, faster and importantly healthier! Windows and doors play an incredibly important part of the home. Unfortunately, we often see poor specification and product selections that are cost driven. The cost to remedy this is unaffordable, leaving homeowners burdened with a selection they probably didn’t make. Change is never easy, but with a clear vision and passionate group of people, good things happen. I hope the collective work put in to the Healthy Homes Design Guide will push NZ forward”.
